Physical therapy is a healthcare profession concerned with prevention, treatment and management of movement disorders arising from conditions and diseases occurring throughout the lifespan. Physical therapy is performed by either a physical therapist or a physical therapist assistant acting under the direction of a physical therapist. Physical therapists utilize a patient’s history and physical examination in diagnosis and treatment, and if necessary, Physical therapists will also incorporate the results of laboratory and imaging studies. Electrodiagnostic testing may also be of assistance.
Physical therapists often consult and practice with a variety of other professionals, such as physicians, dentists, nurses, educators, social workers, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, and audiologists. Physical therapists should have strong interpersonal skills so that they can educate patients about their physical therapy treatments and communicate with patients families. Physical therapists also should be compassionate and possess a desire to help patients. Occupational Therapy, more commonly associated with assisting the elderly or equipment prescription after an accident or injury, is a little known gold mine of help for children.
